From Hanoi to Lao Cai
By Train
Many travelers opt for the train from Hanoi to Lao Cai, which offers a more comfortable and safer alternative to sleeper buses. The train journey takes approximately 8 hours, typically departing in the late evening and arriving in Lao Cai early in the morning. From there, you can take a taxi or pre-arranged car to Sapa, or choose to stay in Lao Cai.
Tip: Consider booking a tourist train, which offers better-maintained cabins and toilets compared to standard compartments. Though pricier, the added comfort and quality make it a worthwhile experience.
By Bus
If you’re heading directly to Sapa, many buses travel from Hanoi to Sapa, passing through Lao Cai. The bus journey takes around 5-6 hours. If you specifically need to stop in Lao Cai, buses are readily available. Another popular route is from Ha Giang to Lao Cai, which takes approximately 6-7 hours.

Bus & Shared Vans
Buses, such as those by Sapa Grouptour, depart early in the morning around 6:15 to coincide with train arrivals in Lao Cai. Tickets cost around 100,000 VND (4 EUR). Shared vans, which operate similarly, charge approximately 200,000 VND (8 EUR) for a more comfortable ride.
Taxi & Private Cars
Taxis are available outside the Lao Cai train station, with fares starting at around 30 EUR to Sapa. Alternatively, booking a private car ensures a fixed price and hassle-free pickup upon your arrival.

Is the City Lao Cai Worth Staying?
While Lao Cai city offers accommodation, it is not the most recommended place to stay unless you have specific reasons. Most travelers come to this region to explore the rice terraces and ethnic cultures, which are better experienced in and around Sapa.

Best Weather: Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) offer pleasant weather with little rainfall and moderate temperatures. Winter (December to January) can get cold due to the region’s high elevation.
Most Beautiful Time: For the iconic rice terraces, visit during the summer months. From May (mirror-like water reflections) to August (lush green fields) and early September (golden harvest), the terraces are at their most stunning.
